Partnership for Change: the NALSAS Strategy (1999)

Background

In December 1992 a meeting of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) discussed the importance of Asian Languages and the understanding of Asian cultures in relation to Australia's economic interests in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Report, Asian Languages and Australia's Economic Future was present to COAG in February 1994. It detailed a comprehensive long-term strategy - the National Asian Languages and Studies in Schools (NALSAS) strategy - to give effect to COAG's decision of December 1992. MCEETYA established the NALSAS Taskforce to oversee the implementation of the Strategy in Australian schools.

Partnership for Change is the progress report from the Taskforce on the first quadrennium of the NALSAS strategy 1995-1998.
