National Assessment Program: Science Literacy

National assessment in Science Literacy commenced in 2003 as part of a rolling three-yearly cycle of sample assessments that also includes civics and citizenship and information and communication technology literacy.

Every three years a sample of Year 6 students from across Australia are tested on their capacity to use scientific knowledge and approaches.

Next Science Literacy Assessment—2009

The next NAP—Science Literacy will be undertaken by a sample of Year 6 students in October 2009. The test will comprise a 60-minute pencil and paper section and a 45-minute practical task.

Further information on the 2009 NAP—Science Literacy can be found in the following documents:

Previous Science Literacy Assessments

Reports on previous national assessments in Science Literacy are available for download.

School release materials are also available for previous Science Literacy assessments. The information and assessment materials in these documents have been designed to assist teachers to gauge their own students’ proficiency. By replicating components of the Year 6 NAP—Science Literacy in the classroom, teachers will be able to compare the results of their classes and individual students with the national proficiency levels and standards.
It is anticipated that teachers will be able to reflect on this information to enhance teaching and monitoring programs in our schools.
