National Assessment Program: Civics and Citizenship

National assessment in Civics and Citizenship commenced in 2004 as part of a rolling three-yearly cycle of sample assessments that also includes science literacy and information and communication technology literacy.

Every three years samples of Year 6 and Year 10 students from across Australia are tested on their civic knowledge and understanding and the skills and values needed for active citizenship.

Next Civics and Citizenship Assessment—2010

The next NAP—Civics and Citizenship will be undertaken by samples of Year 6 and Year 10 students in 2010.

In October 2009, there was a trial of civics and citizenship items for a small number of students in Years 6 and 10 from Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, in preparation for the main assessment in 2010. Futher information about the 2010 assessment is available below.

School release materials are also available for previous Civics and Citizenship assessments. The information and assessment materials in these documents have been designed to assist teachers to gauge their own students’ proficiency. By replicating components of the Year 6 and Year 10 NAP—Civics and Citizenship in the classroom, teachers will be able to compare the results of their classes and individual students with the national proficiency levels and standards. It is anticipated that teachers will be able to reflect on this information to enhance teaching and monitoring programs in our schools.
